S. 3187 The Lung Cancer Mortality Reduction Rate of 2008
On June 25, 2008, Senator Chuck Hagel (R-NE) introduced S. 3187, the Lung Cancer Mortality Reduction Rate of 2008. The bill would amend Title IV of the PHS Act to require the Secretary of HHS, in consultation with the heads of NIH, Defense, Veterans Affairs, CDC, FDA, CMS, NCMHD and other members of the Lung Cancer Advisory Board, to implement a program to reduce lung cancer by 50 percent by 2015. In addition, the bill would require the Secretary to implement a program to provide incentives for the development of chemoprevention drugs and new agents to curtail or prevent nicotine addiction. The bill would also require the Secretary to establish an early disease research and management program targeted at the high incidence and mortality rates among minority and low-income populations. Also included are provisions aimed at DOD and VA. S. 3187 was referred to the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions (HELP).
