On May 6, 2008, Senator Frank Lautenberg (D-NJ) introduced S. 2983, the Diabetes Prevention, Access and Care Act. S. 2983 would require the Director of NIH to expand, intensify, conduct, coordinate and support research with respect to pre-diabetes and diabetes, particularly type 2, in minority populations; direct that these activities include research on the causes and effects of health care access disparities and racial discrimination; and require that the Director, acting through NCMHD, make grants to expand the Minority Access Research Careers (MARC) program internship and mentoring opportunities for recruitment of minorities in diabetes-focused health fields. S. 2983 was referred to the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions. (HELP).
