S. 911The Conquer Childhood Cancer Act of 2007
On March 19, Senator Jack Reed (D-RI) introduced S. 911, the Conquer Childhood Cancer Act of 2007. The legislation would amend Title IV of the Public Health Service Act to establish special programs of research excellence, a pediatric cancer fellowship program, a national childhood cancer registry, and a public awareness campaign. The bill would authorize $30 million for each of the Fiscal Years 2008 through 2012. It is identical to H.R. 1553, introduced by Representative Deborah Pryce (R-OH) on March 13. S. 911 was referred to the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions (HELP).
COMMITTEE/SUBCOMMITTEE ACTION
On November 14, the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions (HELP) amended and ordered reported by voice vote S. 911, the Conquer Childhood Cancer Act. Text of the revised bill is not yet available. As introduced, the legislation would amend Title IV of the Public Health Service Act to establish special programs of research excellence, a pediatric cancer fellowship program, a national childhood cancer registry, and a public awareness campaign. The bill would authorize $30 million for each of the Fiscal Years 2008 through 2012. No action has occurred on H.R. 1553, the companion measure in the House introduced by Representative Deborah Pryce (R-OH).
On December 12, the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions (HELP) reported with an amendment in the nature of a substitute S. 911, the Conquer Childhood Cancer Act (without written report). On November 14, the Senate HELP Committee amended and ordered the bill reported by voice vote. As amended, the legislation would amend Title IV of the Public Health Service Act to require NIH to 1) enhance, expand, and intensify pediatric cancer research; 2) award pediatric cancer fellowships; and 3) award grants for a public awareness campaign. The bill would authorize $30 million for each of the Fiscal Years 2008 through 2012. In addition, CDC would be required to award a grant to enhance and expand infrastructure to track the epidemiology of pediatric cancer into a comprehensive nationwide registry. S. 911 was placed on the Senate Legislative Calendar under General Orders. No action has occurred on H.R. 1553, the companion measure introduced by Representative Deborah Pryce (R-OH).
