S. 1551—The Comprehensive Tuberculosis Elimination Act of 2007

On June 5, Senator Sherrod Brown (D-OH) introduced S. 1551, a bill to amend the Public Health Service Act with respect to making progress toward the goal of eliminating tuberculosis, and for other purposes. The text of the measure is not yet available. S. 1551 has four cosponsors and was referred to the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions (HELP).

COMMITTEE/SUBCOMMITTEE ACTION

On November 14, the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions (Senator Edward Kennedy [D-MA], Chairman) marked up S. 1551, the Comprehensive Tuberculosis Elimination Act of 2007, with an amendment in the nature of a substitute, and ordered the measure to be reported. The text of the bill is not yet available. Provisions would expand research at CDC and NIH into new diagnostic and treatment tools, testing the safety and efficacy of new drugs and the relationship between TB and HIV/AIDS.
