H. R. 5468 —Nino's Act

On February 14, 2008, Representative Bud Shuster (R-PA), introduced H.R. 5468, Nino’s Act.  The legislation would require Medicaid to pay for the cost of treatments children received as participants in clinical trials conducted or funded by NIH once the trial ends, if they have insufficient or no health insurance coverage.  The families of children do not have to satisfy the income requirements of Medicaid to qualify.  Physicians participating in the clinical trial must certify that the child has been successfully treated and is likely to continue to benefit from such treatment.  H.R. 5468 was referred to the House Committee on Energy and Commerce. The companion measure, S. 2629, was introduced by Senator Arlen Specter (R-PA) on February 13, 2008.
