S. 1289—The Uterine Fibroid Research and Education Act of 2005

On June 22, Senator Barbara Mikulski (D-MD) re-introduced S. 1289, the Uterine Fibroid Research and Education Act of 2005. The bill would expand and coordinate research on uterine fibroids at NIH. S. 1289 would authorize $30 million for uterine fibroid research each year from 2006 through 2010, require the Secretary, through the CDC, to educate health care providers about uterine fibroids, and establish a public education campaign for patients. The bill was referred to the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions (HELP). A companion measure, H.R. 3034, sponsored by Representative Stephanie Tubbs Jones (D-OH), was introduced the same day. H.R. 3034 was referred to the House Committee on Energy and Commerce.
